Wimberley Nominated for Best Southern Small Town by USA Today Readers

What an honor! Wimberley is currently ranked 12th, trailing fellow Texas Hill Country destination Fredericksburg and West Texas’ Marfa. Voting is open until May 25th. In the words of USA Today:

blue hole tree swingWriters, artists and musicians all love Wimberley – and help make it a phenomenal Texas Hill Country getaway – but even outside the arts it’s easy to see its small-town appeal. From its impressive monthly Market Days, with nearly 500 booths packed with wares, to beautiful hikes up Old Baldy Mountain or refreshing pursuits at beautiful Blue Hole Regional Park, it’s a destination well-suited to naturalists, “cultural-ists” and everyone in between.

I lived in Houston TX the last 40 years. I’ve been wanting to return to my Texas hill country roots for a very long time! I finally made it back about 6 months ago. I was fortunate enough to even find employment in Wimberley. There aren’t very many jobs there so I really feel very fortunate. It is as beautiful as they say, as is the entire Texas hill country!

You think so? Truth be told, there’s not enough water, wells are going dry, good old boy local politics favor the few, feuds rage over a proposed wastewater plant’s plans to dump minimally processed effluent into the creeks and river, tourists swarm like ants at a picnic, and we have an underfunded school system thanks to Texas’ Robin Hood fund-sharing law. If you aren’t here already, you’re too late. Sorry to burst your bubble.
